When it comes to restoring heritage buildings, there’s something of a balancing act involved. How do you ensure that the character of the property is preserved, but the results will last for as long as possible? That is something that we have built quite the reputation for over the years. Here at Jack Arnold UK, we have worked on a wide range of projects involving heritage building repairs. Here is how we balance modern tools and techniques with a traditional approach.
Recognising that each building is different
One of the most important things in heritage building repairs is recognising that each building is going to be totally different from the last. Modern builds have been constructed in line with set standards and regulations, but many of those simply did not exist when many of the older properties that we have worked on were built. That means that we can expect different materials and different building techniques from one site to another, even if those buildings look pretty similar at first glance. That is the first step that influences our approach.
The condition of the building
Another thing that informs how we work is the condition of a building. Again, this can vary hugely from property to property. Some heritage buildings are in great condition and have had careful conservation work carried out on them over the years. So we may come in to provide just a few finishing touches. Other buildings may have fallen into total disrepair, with things like damp playing a huge part too. That is obviously going to require a more radical approach from us and will see us move towards more cutting-edge techniques.
Our tools and techniques
There’s a misconception that modern techniques have no place in heritage building repairs, but we like to challenge that. Metalwork techniques such as laser cutting and powder coating can have a place in heritage buildings, along with computer-aided design tools. The key is to know how to use them appropriately. We only ever use modern tools and techniques to benefit the end result and longevity of our heritage building repairs, not to speed up the process and cut corners.
Learning from the past
There is so much to be learned from the craftsmanship seen in older buildings. We have many years of experience when it comes to traditional techniques, allowing us to deliver the same beautiful, intricate results that make a period building so special. When it comes to materials, we carefully source them to ensure that they blend in perfectly with what is already in place, but also make sure that they comply with all modern regulations too.
