Are you looking to add a metal fence to your property? Then you have come to the right place! We are leading designers and manufacturers of metal fencing and railings, and work with a wide range of property owners to deliver solutions that bring their visions to life on time and within budget. What about planning permission, though? Are there any rules and regulations that you need to be aware of when it comes to your new metal fencing? Here is everything you need to know!

Fencing height restrictions

In the vast majority of cases, you will not need to seek planning permission for putting up a metal fence in the UK, as long as this new addition to your property meets certain criteria. If the fence is more than 1 metre tall and it is going to be installed next to a public highway or footpath, then you will have to get in touch with your local authority to get permission.

For parts of your property that aren’t located next to a highway or footpath, such as a garden fence, you have more flexibility. In these cases, you only need to get permission if the fence or railings are set to be more than 2 metres tall.

What about railings?

We also specialise in railings alongside our fencing work. So what about planning regulations in this case? When you install railings, there are minimum height requirements that you need to meet. Any guardrails on internal stairs and landings need to be 0.9 m high, and railings on external balconies or roof terraces have to be a minimum of 1.1 m. Don’t worry, we will ensure that your railings meet these minimum requirements and are totally safe for use.

What if I live in a listed property?

If you want to add railings or fencing to a listed property or one that is in a conservation area, then you are more likely to need planning permission. This is so that any fencing or railings you add to your property are in keeping with its character. We have many years of experience when it comes to working on period properties and know how to come up with solutions that not only give you the look that you want but are likely to be approved by your local authority. In cases where they aren’t, we can go back to the drawing board and work in line with their recommendations.
